Belmont, MS — On the evening of Tuesday, October 22, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch met with the Tishomingo County Republican Party and county and local leaders at Sparks Drive-In in Belmont, MS. The gathering provided an opportunity for Attorney General Fitch to discuss key issues affecting the state and to hear from local community leaders about the challenges they are facing.
During her remarks, Attorney General Fitch addressed the ongoing fight against human trafficking in Mississippi, a cause she has championed since taking office. She highlighted the state’s progress in strengthening laws to protect victims and punish traffickers but acknowledged that there is still much work to be done. "Human trafficking is a scourge on our communities, and we are working tirelessly with your Sheriff and Chiefs to bring traffickers to justice," said Fitch. "Through collaboration with law enforcement, non-profit organizations, and community leaders, we are turning the tide on this horrific crime."
Fitch also spoke at length about the fentanyl crisis that is devastating communities across Mississippi and the nation. She emphasized her office's commitment to working with law enforcement agencies to crack down on the illegal distribution of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs. "Fentanyl killed over 74,000 Americans in 2023 . It is killing children and destroying families. We must be vigilant in our efforts to prevent this poison from taking more lives. My office is committed to ensuring those responsible for this epidemic are held accountable," Fitch said, noting that Mississippi has seen a rise in overdose deaths tied to the lethal drug in recent years.
As Mississippi's chief attorney and chief law enforcement officer, Attorney General Fitch reaffirmed her dedication to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all Mississippians. She spoke about her role in defending the state’s laws in court and overseeing criminal prosecutions, consumer protection efforts, and a range of initiatives aimed at improving public safety. "It is an honor to serve as the people's attorney and to be entrusted with the protection of our rights and freedoms. Together with law enforcement and the judiciary, we are ensuring that Mississippi remains a safe and secure place to live, work, and raise a family," Fitch concluded.
The event in Belmont was part of Fitch's ongoing efforts to engage with local communities, listen to their concerns, and share her vision for a safer and more prosperous Mississippi.
