For many, when July rolls around it means the return to school for teachers and students is just around the corner.

It's that time for parents to begin buying back-to-school supplies.

Mississippi has set the sales tax holiday for this weekend; it will begin at 12:01 am, Friday, July 12, 2024, and end at 11:59 pm Sunday, July 14, 2024.

Each participating state sets its requirements for what items are considered tax-free back-to-school supplies. For a complete list of items included and what purchases are excluded visit the State of Mississippi website at https://www.dor.ms.gov.

The state has laid out what is considered clothing, footwear, accessories, and school supplies.

There is a cap on the amount of each purchase that is tax-free.

The Official Guide to the Sales Tax Holiday is a detailed list of guidelines, along with a list of all eligible and non-eligible clothing, footwear, and accessories as well as, a list of eligible school supplies.

For families with multiple children returning to school in the fall, this sales tax holiday can impact the amount of money spent on supplies and clothes.

If families want to take full advantage of this yearly sales tax-free holiday, the surrounding states participate and each has their own set of guidelines.

Alabama's sales tax holiday begins on the third Friday of July and ends at midnight on Sunday.

Tennessee's sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 am on Friday, July 26, and ends at 11:59 pm, Sunday, July 28, 2024.
