Saturday's Assassination Attempt marks a new moment Americans will never forget

There will always be notable times in history.

In a perfect world, those times are moments of great success or achievements, but unfortunately, this is not an ideal world.

We are living in uncertain times, just as the generations before us learned to charter, we shall learn to navigate these times, too.

For every American, there are specific moments in history forever locked into their memory.

These events are significant enough that Americans can recall minute details about their day.

Ask those alive about the JFK assassination, and they will remember exactly where they were and the events surrounding them.

For Gen-Xers, it is the day the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded while we watched from our classrooms, and the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan.

Then there was September 11, 2001, a day that changed the world forever.

Saturday marked a new moment in history with the attempted assassination of the former President and Republican nominee for the upcoming Presidential election, Donald Trump

As has been reported incessantly, he narrowly missed death. Just a slight tilt of the head is all that separated him from life and death.

No matter your party affiliation, the actions of July 13 should not be acceptable.

Over the next several days and weeks, every moment of July 13 will be analyzed and scrutinized, from the quick response by the former President’s detail team, to former President Trump's fist in the air as he was rushed off the stage, to the motives behind the shooter.

There may be questions that are never answered, such as, in the case of JFK, was there just one shooter? In the Challenger, were those aboard still alive after the initial explosion? On September 11, did the government know about the terrorist plot against the US?

We may never know the true motives behind the assassination attempt, even though a deep dive into the life of the shooter by the government and independent researchers will ensue.

Less than 24 hours after the attempt, we know his name, his age, where he lived, when he graduated high school, where he worked, and that he was registered as a Republican. According to the Associated Press, he donated $15 to a progressive political action committee in 2021.

A tragedy did occur.

Former President Donald Trump was injured.

An innocent attendee was killed trying to protect his family from being hit while two others were injured.

Corey Comperatore, a husband and father died as a result of the shooting. His final act was to shield his wife and daughter from being hit.

Two others reported as injured, but stable are David Dutch and James Copenhaver.

The protection detail assigned to former President Trump immediately did their job with securing him and taking out the threat.

Now, the investigation will begin as to how the shooter was able to pull off the attempt. Let the conspiracy theories start…

The Democrat and Republican nominees had not been formally announced, and we already had bloodshed.

Due to the attempted assassination, both parties have united on common ground to end the violence.

According to Reuters, after Biden's weak showing in the debate against Trump, the Democrats were prepared to launch a $50 million advertising campaign against Trump and his legal woes.

After the attempt, the campaign suspended all political communication, including the attack ads.

No matter the side you sit on, we should all denounce the actions of Saturday afternoon and unite as Americans to civilly move forward in what could be a very divisive election.

For the Comperatore family, life will never be the same.

Their world stopped at that rally on Sunday evening.

The election will move forward, the candidates will campaign, and a President will be chosen in November, but one family will still be reeling from the events of July 13th.

Once the ballots have long been counted and forgotten, life moves forward.

Is this what politics have come to be in America? Is this where we are now? Smear campaigns, false news, and bloodshed?

History of Presidential Assassinations and Attempted Assassinations

The following information came from statista.com:

From 1835 to 2005, there have been 4 Presidents assassinated, 2 Presidents shot but survived, 3 Presidents unharmed but others were killed or injured, and 4 attempts where no one was harmed but the culprit.

The 4 Presidents killed were: Abraham Lincoln; James Garfield, who lived almost 4 months after shot; William McKinley, who died one week after being hit; and John F. Kennedy.

Those Presidents who narrowly escaped death: Theodore Roosevelt was shot in the chest while giving a speech; Ronald Reagan was shot outside a Washington hotel; President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt was shot at, but the bullet missed and killed the Mayor of Chicago; Gerald Ford had two separate attempts on his life, but was not injured; President Abraham Lincoln had an attempted assassination 9 months before his death, the bullet went through his stovepipe hat; while outside of the country in Tbilisi, Georgia, George W. Bush had a grenade tossed onto the stage while speaking, it did not detonate due to the trigger being held in place by the handkerchief used to conceal it; and now former President Donald Trump can be added to this list.
