About 90 Iuka congregants are without a church home after a Saturday fire destroyed a church on Highway 72.

Iuka fire fighters initially responded to an attic fire at First Free Will Baptist Church about 3:25 Saturday afternoon, according to Iuka Fire Department Chief Blake Melton. Crews stayed about two hours trying to make sure that all the electrical fire was extinguished. Melton said that crews were called back out about 11 p.m. and the attic was burning again, flames through the roof. Other trucks responding were Harmony Central, Midway, Snowdown-Pleasant Hill and other individuals. Authorities are relatively sure the cause was electrical, and no further investigation is planned at this time.

Though the structure is a complete loss, by the grace of God several items were saved, including a special chair for a disabled parishioner, a Bible gifted to Pastor Jamie Nanney by his, now deceased, son many years ago, and the pastor’s laptop, with all of his sermons and biblical teachings.

A donation fund will be set up to help with rebuilding, more information to follow.
